Bootstrap vs. Materialize

The competitiveness of the market forces us to use the best tools, but which is better?

Already many of you know or have worked previously with these frameworks that at the moment have become fundamental in the layout of websites due to the ease and time that these save us. Bootstrap created by Twitter and Materialize created by Google are the two most used of a myriad of frameworks that exist in the market and that are constantly updated, opening more and more the fissure to decide which is better than another.

Through this post we will focus on highlighting those differences and dissipating the line that separates them.

In principle Twitter took the graphic styles of your social network, and complement it with some jQuery functionalities to create this framework that could be used for any layout project.

Among the most notable elements of Bootstrap are: its grid (or grid), its text styles applied to the main HTML elements (typography, tables, forms, buttons) and a great variety of functionalities in jQuery (modal, slider, accordions , Etc), as well as a large series of components that increases with each update.

Grid system

In this way, we had a layout base, both for simple projects and very detailed graphically. As drawbacks, the graphic style seemed very focused on creating content management panels (back-end), so we had to make enough changes in CSS to get the touch we wanted to the Web.

Powered by Google, it was created as a style guide for Google’s in-house, mobile and tablet-focused applications. From these definitions, projects that created the framework appeared. This combines some of the Google definitions as additional elements in jQuery like manners, forms effects and many more. Although it is very well done, it does not have as many updates or the same number of usage by users as its Bootstrap competition.

Materialize also has its own grid system. This allows us to make very complete pages with Google’s graphic styles with all the functionalities we need, which is a strong aspect of the framework. As with Bootstrap, we can complement this framework with our own styles to give that special touch to our pages.

We can conclude that:

Materialize is more oriented to the graphic and visual style of the site, focused on the care of text, color among others. Although its syntax is friendly to be shorter, easy to remember and turn to use.

While Bootstrap is focused on providing a better structure, its syntax is more complex, but it is a more complete framework with more updates.

Although it may seem frivolous, popularity is an aspect to keep in mind. Since Bootstrap has a huge developer community that Materialize lacks. For this reason it is more common statistically speaking, that if you continue a project of someone is designed using Bootstrap, or that if you start working in a web development company you are asked to use Bootstrap in the projects.

Choosing the right framework will depend mostly on the type of project you are going to do and with which you feel more at ease, but with both you can lay out projects of high quality.
